Join us in celebrating the release of political prisoner David Gilbert’s memoirs, Love and Struggle: My Life in SDS, the Weather Underground, and Beyond.
David has devoted his life to making the world a better place. The Civil Rights struggle of the 60s exposed him to the sham of US democracy and embodied the beauty of collective struggle. In 1965 he started the Vietnam Committee at Columbia University in NY and became a founding member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) there. In 1967, David authored the first SDS pamphlet on US Imperialism and participated in the Columbia Strike of 1968. After about 5 years of organizing in the above ground movement, David joined the revolutionary underground, spending a total of 10 years engaging in building a clandestine resistance movement.
On October 20, 1981, he and other comrades were captured at Nyack, New York, during an attempted expropriation by a unit of the Black Liberation Army working with white revolutionaries. During the expropriation attempt, a Brinks guard and two police officers were killed. Charged and convicted of felony murder, David is serving a 75 year (minimum) to life sentence.
While in prison, David has been an inspiration, and acted as a mentor, to new generations of activists, including many from Montreal.

A nice Jewish boy from suburban Boston – hell, an Eagle Scout! – David Gilbert arrived at Columbia University just in time for the explosive Sixties. From the early anti-Vietnam War protests to the founding of SDS, from the Columbia Strike to the tragedy of the Townhouse, Gilbert was on the scene: as organizer, theoretician, and above all, activist. He was among the first militants who went underground to build the clandestine resistance to war and racism known as “Weatherman.” And he was among the last to emerge, in captivity, after the disaster of the 1981 Brinks robbery, an attempted expropriation that resulted in four deaths and long prison terms. In this extraordinary memoir, written from the maximum-security prison where he has lived for almost thirty years, David Gilbert tells the intensely personal story of his own Long March from liberal to radical to revolutionary.

David a dédié sa vie à faire que le monde soit une meilleure place. La lutte pour les droits civils dans les années 60 l’a exposé à la supercherie de la démocratie des USA et a incarné la beauté de la lutte collective. En 1965, il a fondé le Comité Vietnam à l’Université Columbia à NY et y est devenu un membre fondateur des Students for a Democratic Society (SDS ou Étudiants pour une société démocratique). En 1967, David a rédigé le premier pamphlet des SDS sur l’impérialisme des USA et a participé à la Grève de Columbia de 1968. Après environs 5 années passées à organiser dans le mouvement, David a rejoint la résistance clandestine, passant un total de 10 ans à s’impliquer dans la construction d’un mouvement de résistance clandestine.
Le 20 octobre 1981, David et d’autres camarades ont été capturés à Nyack, New York, durant une tentative d’expropriation menée par une unité de la Black Liberation Army (Armée de Libération Noire) et des révolutionnaires blancs. Durant la tentative d’expropriation, un garde de la Brinks et deux policiers furent tués. Accusé puis condamné pour meurtre, David purge une peine de minimum 75 ans à la perpétuité.
Alors qu’il était en prison, David a été une inspiration et a agi comme mentor à de nouvelles générations d’activistes, incluant plusieurs de Montréal.

Un beau garçon Juif de la banlieue de Boston (il a même été dans les scouts!), David Gilbert est arrivé à l’Université Columbia juste à temps pour les explosives années 1960. Des premières manifestations contre la Guerre du Vietnam à la fondation de SDS, de la Grève de Columbia à la tragédie du Townhouse, Gilbert était sur la scène : comme organisateur, théoricien et par-dessus tout activiste. Il a été parmi les premiers militants qui sont entrés dans la clandestinité pour construire la résistance à la guerre et au racisme connue comme le « Weatherman ». Il a été parmi les derniers à en émerger, en captivité, après le désastre du vol de la Brinks de 1981, une tentative d’expropriation qui a résulté en quatre morts et de longues peines de prison. Dans ce mémoire extraordinaire, écrit depuis la prison à sécurité maximale où il a vécu durant près de trente années, David Gilbert raconte l’histoire intensément personnelle de sa Longue Marche d’un libéral à un radical à un révolutionnaire.
Aujourd’hui un mentor aimé et admiré d’une nouvelle génération d’activistes, il raconte avec un humour rare, avec une compréhension sans illusions, et avec une candeur peu commune les erreurs et les avancées, les terreurs et les triomphes des années soixante et au-delà. C’est une bataille qui est loin d’être terminée, mais qui n’est toujours pas perdue : la lutte pour bâtir un nouveau monde et l’amour qui porte cet effort. Un conte qui nous met en garde et montre comment faire aussi, Love and Struggle est un livre aussi candide, sans compromis et humain que son auteur.
